The most commonly used dual-head laser drilling system is the hybrid laser drilling system, which consists of an ultraviolet laser head and a CO2 laser head. This integrated hybrid laser drilling method can be used to drill copper and dielectric simultaneously. Using ultraviolet light, copper is drilled to generate the size and shape of the desired hole, followed by an open dielectric drilled with a CO2 laser. The drilling process is done by drilling a 2in X 2in block called a domain.

CO2 lasers effectively remove dielectrics, even non-uniform glass-reinforced dielectrics. However, a single CO2 laser cannot make small holes (less than 75μm) and remove copper, with a few exceptions, it can remove pre-treated thin copper foils below 5μm (lustino, 2002). The UV laser is capable of making very small holes and can remove all ordinary copper street (3-36μm, 1oz, even electroplated copper foil). The ultraviolet laser can also remove the dielectric material alone, but at a slower rate. Moreover, for non-uniform materials, such as reinforced glass FR-4, the effect is usually not good. This is because the glass can only be removed if the energy density is increased to a certain extent, which will also destroy the inner pad. Since the stick laser system includes both ultraviolet laser and CO2 laser, it can achieve the best in both areas, with the ultraviolet laser can complete all the copper foil and small holes, with the CO2 laser can quickly drill the dielectric.

Today, most dual-head laser drilling systems have a fixed distance between the two bits and a stepping-repeat beam positioning technology. The advantage of the step, repeat laser remote regulator itself is the large adjustment range of the domain (up to (50 X 50)μm). The disadvantage is that the laser remote regulator must be moved in steps within a fixed area, and the spacing between the two bits is fixed. A typical dual-head laser remote regulator has a fixed distance between the two bits (approximately 150μm). For different panel sizes, a fixed-distance drill bit cannot operate in the same optimal configuration as a programmable pitch drill bit.

Today, the dual-head laser drilling system has a variety of different specifications of performance, can be applied to small circuit board manufacturers, but also suitable for mass production of circuit board manufacturers.
